Your informed opinions can be shared with the board. Listed below are some “talking points” that you may find helpful in writing your note. Please keep your emails brief, as school board members are volunteers and are busy people.

Talking Points

  • The 10.2 acre stadium site was sold to the school district for $1 in the 1930’s, to be used for the benefit of the public. SCS’s plan would keep the site in use for the benefit of the public. Doesn’t 4J have an obligation to the community to do so?
  • There is a large base of support for this proposal among the people of Eugene. In barely a month, with very little effort, over $75,000 was pledged. The proposal serves almost everyone in almost every community. The local neighborhood is behind it. Local youth sports providers are behind it. The soccer community is behind it.
  • Does the south Willamette corridor need another shopping center? From 24th avenue south is a retail strip. From 18th avenue north is another retail strip. Does the tree lined area between, with only residences and medical offices, need the congestion and traffic that a retail “big box” store would bring?
  • The SCS plan creates new jobs, millions of dollars in construction work, and hopefully indoor sports and recreation facilities for area youth. These are all things we need. It also provides a new professional sports team for the community to embrace, that would bring tourism dollars as well as entertainment.
  • Eugene has always found a way to finance the projects it really needs. The Hult Center is one example. The downtown library is another. With the commitment and dedication of the citizens of Lane County, plus a tenacious team of volunteers, this project can become a reality.
